Roland has over 20 years of executive experience in the diagnostics and medical device industries, including serving as CEO of Roche Diagnostics for six years and CEO of Smith & Nephew for three years.
In 2024, he was appointed Board Chair at Mettler-Toledo International Inc., having joined the company in August 2022 as a director and member of the Audit and Compensation Committees. Since 2021, he has been a non-executive member of the Board of Directors at Sonova Holding AG, where he also chairs the Nomination and Compensation Committee.
From 2019 to March 2022, Diggelmann served as Chief Executive Officer of Smith & Nephew plc, a UK-based global medical technology company specialising in orthopaedics, sports medicine, and advanced wound management. He originally joined the company in 2018 as an independent non-executive director before transitioning to the CEO role.
Prior to this, Diggelmann spent over a decade at Roche Diagnostics. Starting in 2008 as Head of the Asia Pacific region, based in Singapore, he advanced to Chief Operating Officer of the Diagnostics Division in 2012 and became a member of Roche's Corporate Executive Committee. He was subsequently promoted to CEO of Roche Diagnostics, leading the $17 billion revenue division until his departure in 2018.
Earlier in his career, he held senior roles at Zimmer GmbH. From 2004 to 2006, he served as Managing Director in Japan, before becoming Senior Vice President of Sales and Distribution for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) while also acting as Managing Director in Switzerland.
Before joining Zimmer, Diggelmann held leadership positions at Sulzer Orthopedics Ltd., later known as Centerpulse Ltd. Between 1997 and 2004, his roles included Director of Strategic Planning & Marketing, Executive Vice President of Strategic Planning & Marketing, Executive Vice President of Sales for the Asia Pacific region, and Executive Vice President of Sales for Europe and Asia Pacific.
He began his career in 1995 as Manager of Strategic Planning at AlloPro AG in Switzerland, establishing a foundation for his extensive leadership journey across the global medical technology and diagnostics industries.
